Little information can be located about the current chain suspension bridge in Newburyport. The bridge is located at a point originally bridged in 1792. Two previous chain suspension bridges also occupied the spot, including one (1810) built to James Finley's design which failed in 1827, and a replacement bridge that lasted from 1827 to 1909.
