The Verrazano Narrows Bridge was designed by Othmar Ammann and construction began August 13, 1959. The bridge has a main span of 4260 feet with 693 foot towers. The bridge has two decks, the lower finished in November, 1964 and the upper in June of 1969. The main span is so long that the deck height above water changes by 12 feet between summer and winter. The bridge connects Brooklyn and Staten Island and was the world's longest suspension bridge from 1964 to 1981.
