The new Baer & Stegmaier Brewery was founded in 1863 by Charles Stegmaier, and closed during the Panic of 1873.
After forming a partnership with his son, Christian E. Stegmaier, Charles expanded and repurchased the business in 1880 - which continued to grow as C. Stegmaier & Son; a new brewhouse. Storage facility were built in 1894 for an annual capacity to 300,000 barrels. The Stegmainer`s incorporatedthe enterprise in 1897 as the Stegmaier Brewing Co. After years of decline, the company closed in October, 1974. In the same year, the company was sold to Lion, Inc. of Wilkes-Barre. The vacated Stegmaier brewery structure was purchased in 1978, and is currently owned by the City of Wilkes-Barre. The beer is still produced by Lion, Inc. today.
