Built in 1879, this hog-back railway bridge is constructed from wrought iron box girders with two cross-braced ribs, approached from the north by a masonry viaduct. The bridge has a span of 91.4 metres (300 feet) and stands 26.2 metres (86 feet) above the high water mark.
When built, the Wearmouth Railway Bridge was the largest hog-back iron girder bridge in the world.
The bridge was constructed to carry the North Eastern Railway Company\'s Monkwearmouth Junction Railway over the River Wear.
