Notes
The Mount Hope Bridge was built in 1928 and 1929 to connect the cities of Bristol and Portsmouth, Rhode Island. The bridge was designed by David B. Steinman and built by a private company. The state of Rhode Island believed the bridge would be too expensive for a public project. The bridge company was purchased by the state in 1955. The bridge is notable as an attempt to use heat-treated steel for the suspension cables (over the architect's protests) which required the bridge to be dismantled and conventional cables added within four months.
