The original Hennepin Avenue Bridge in Minneapolis is claimed to be the first bridge of the Mississippi. The original bridge was a suspension bridge with wooden towers. This bridge deteriorated and was replaced by a suspension bridge with stone towers in 1876. The second bridge lasted until 1891 when it was replaced by a steel arch bridge.
