Notes
The Newport Transporter Bridge was built in 1906 in Newport, Wales, to address a problematic crossing of the River Usk. Designed by Ferdinand Arnodin, the bridge uses a traveling platform suspended from the overhead structure to carry vehicles across the river. The height of the towers is 242 feet (74 metres) and the height of the horizontal beam above the road is 177 feet (54 metres). The transporter platform travels the 592 feet (181 metres) between the towers at ten feet (three metres) per second. The bridge was built when it was determined that a traditional bridge or ferry crossing was not feasible due to low banks on the shore and low tides in the river.
