The Cincinnati Bridge was constructed to improve accessibility to the city of Cincinnati for farmers and merchants in Kentucky. Despite opposition from the Ohio legislature construction was commenced by John A. Roebling in 1856, but was delayed by the Financial Panic of 1857 and the Civil War. The bridge opened December 1, 1866. The bridge received renovations (mainly to the deck) in both 1896 and 1955.
